NEWPORT, R.I. – A drive spearheaded by members of Salve Regina’s Sigma Beta Delta national business honor society in partnership with Sodexo Dining Services raised $600 for the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center food pantry.

Sigma Beta Delta members recruited Salve Regina students on the university’s meal plan to authorize Sodexo to donate $3.50 from the cost of their meals for a day to be donated to support the MLK food pantry.

On Tuesday, senior business majors Erica Smith and Caitlin Seidl visited the Martin Luther King Center along with their Sigma Beta Delta faculty advisor, Dr. Arlene Nicholas, to present a $603 check to Alyson Novick, development director for MLK. Sigma Beta Delta members Emma Silva and Stephanie Neofostistos were also involved in organizing the effort.

Novick said the funding will help the community center stock their food pantry shelves, not just during the holiday season but beyond, when the need is equally significant.

“This is a really creative way to make a difference,” Novick said of the effort by students and Sodexo. “Hunger doesn’t take a holiday. We need food 365 days a year. We’re seeing hunger spread across all age spectrums and can’t do it all on our own. We really rely on the community and Salve Regina has been a great partner.”

During the Thanksgiving and holiday seasons, the MLK Community Center provides holiday baskets to their neighbors in need throughout Newport County. Each basket contains the traditional holiday meal, plus enough food to feed the family during the holiday break.

Beyond the holidays, the MLK Community Center operates a breakfast program on Monday through Friday, as well as its Feed a Friend Food pantry, which is open three days a week to clients in need.

Altogether, the MLK Community Center produces more than 76,000 meals for families and individuals annually – many of whom are working multiple jobs and living in Newport County communities not typically known for poverty. About 70 percent of the food currently available at the Center’s food pantry is the result of food drives and local donations.

Dr. Marcy Jance, Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Indiana University East in Richmond, Indiana has sent the first check with the request that the award be given to a student attending a school in one of the following states and province located within Region Four: Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin and the Canadian province of Ontario.

Sigma Beta Delta graciously thanks ACBSP Region Four for their generosity and commitment to the honor society movement.

Dr. Dell Ann Janney is the Associate Dean for Experiential Education and Professor of Accounting at Culver-Stockton College where she has taught since 1992. She holds a BS in Accounting, summa cum laude from Culver-Stockton College, an MBA from Western Illinois University, a doctorate from Webster University, and a CPA from the state of Illinois.

Serving as the Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees at Culver-Stockton College, Dr. Janney also serves as the Financial Advisor to Chi Omega Sorority. In addition, Dr. Janney has served as Chair of the Advisory Board to the Culver-Stockton College Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) Student Chapter, which was recognized with the Gold Award of Excellence for the ninth consecutive year and named one of the top four Student Chapters in the nation from 2002-2010.

Dr. Janney is currently the Academic Liaison for the Heartland Council. She has served as past President of the Quincy Area Chapter of the IMA, as well as serving on the IMA Committee on Students from 2001-2005. Dr. Janney was Chair of the IMA National Student Leadership Conference in 2004, 2005 and 2009.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Janney is co-owner of Ruby Development LLC and Jan-Mar Development LLC. Prior to teaching, she was a Corporate Accountant for Quincy Newspapers, Inc. and a General Accounting Analyst for Sheller-Globe Corporation.

Actively involved in community service, Dr. Janney has served as a Board Member of the Lewis County Health Department, former Treasurer of the Canton Public Library, former Finance Chair of the Immanuel United Methodist Church, and former Treasurer of the Sun ‘N’ Surf Swim Club. Presently, Janney is Chair of Board of the Lewis Street Playhouse, a member of the Canton Area Arts Council. She resides in Canton, Missouri with her husband Jeffrey and two daughters, Lauren and Alexis.

Prof. Ewing is Associate Professor of Business Administration and Marketing Communication in the School of Social Sciences, Business and Global Studies at Mary Baldwin College where she has taught since 1977, but for a five-year period when she taught in the School of Business at Virginia Commonwealth University. She has held numerous Department Chair positions, served as the Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees and was Director of IT.

Prof. Ewing was instrumental in the development of majors in Business/CS, Math/CS, CIS, and Marketing Communication and Business for Sustainability at Mary Baldwin. She created several student organizations on campus, is the International Student Advisor and helped develop an exchange program with one of MBC’s sister colleges in Japan. She holds a BS, summa cum laude, from Virginia Commonwealth University, an MBA from Emory University, and an International Business Executive Certificate from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Prof. Ewing is co-owner of Ewing Main Street LLC, a real estate investment firm, and a partner of Ewing Rentals. Actively involved in community service and in her church, she serves as Board Member of Community Action Partnership (CAPSAW) and the Citizens Policy Academy (CPAAA). Prof. Ewing has also served on the Board of the Boys & Girls Club, the SPCA, as well as several other local organizations.  She resides in Staunton, Virginia with her two children, Ryan and Jayme.

Dr. Randy McLeod, Director of the Center for Professional Sales in the College of Business Adminstration at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas is the new Vice-President of Sigma Beta Delta.

Dr. Clifford Eubanks, former Dean of the School of Business at Belmont University in Tennessee and current President of Eubanks Enterprises in Troy, Alabama  is the new Secretary/Treasurer of Sigma Beta Delta.

Dr. Donald Driemeier, Dean Emeritus at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, after serving two terms as President of Sigma Beta Delta, takes his position as Immediate Past President.

New Sigma Beta Delta Member Spotlight

Charles Shrum
Charles graduated with honors in June 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Technical Management with a concen-tration in Human Resources Management from DeVry University. Prior to attending DeVry University Charles served for 12 years in the United States Army. Since his retirement from the Army in 2008 Mr. Shrum has held positions as a Production Manager and Electronics Sales Manager. Upon graduation he accepted a position as the Human Resources Manager with the State Accounting Office at the State of Georgia. In his free time, Charles enjoys working on his clas-sic car, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing and going to the gym.

Linda Carrie Stapleton
Linda graduated with honors in June 2012 from DeVry University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Ad-ministration with a concentration in Accounting. Prior to attending DeVry University Linda received an Associates of Applied Science in Accounting from Flint River Technical College. At her previous school, Linda was bestowed the 2009 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership and a scholarship to DeVry. At Flint River she was president of the local chapter of Phi Beta Lambda and was the 2010 recipient of the William L. Anderson Memorial Award for exhibit-ing outstanding academic and work ethic qualities. For the past 14 years Linda has worked in accounts receivable. In her spare time she enjoys reading, traveling, and snorkeling.

Priscilla Chrystle Waller
Priscilla plans to graduate in October 2012 from DeVry University with a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentra-tion in Human Resources. Priscilla has over 21 years of experience in logistics and personnel management as a United States Army Logistics Officer. In October 2005 she retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. For the past 8 years Priscilla has served as an independent business owner and CEO of Vision Marketing Group. She actively volunteers with the Pregnancy Resource Center of Henry County and served as the President of the Shiloh Toastmaster for 2010 and 2011 and currently serves as the 2012 Secretary/Treasurer. While Priscilla is active in her community and church she also enjoys cooking, photography, gardening and spending time with her family.

Royanne Williams
Royanne graduated from DeVry University with a Bachelor of Science Degree with a concentration in Accounting in June of 2012. In July she will continue her Accounting education by attending the Keller Graduate School of Manage-ment. During her professional career she has worked in Accounts Payable, Banking, Storage Leasing and Real Estate Management. She has had formal training in the performing arts, studying ballet, jazz, modern dance and tap through which she participated in Foreign Cultural Exchanges, and her school’s annual production shows. Royanne is a proud mother of a three year old son.

Felecia Winfield
Felecia graduated from DeVry University in June 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Technical Management with a con-centration in Business Information Systems. During her 20 years at Bell South/AT&T she has held positions in the re-pair facility, finance group and the employee development department. Felecia also worked as a second level manager for the business unit; where her responsibility was to maintain a pre-ordering system for telecommunications carriers. Upon retiring from AT&T, she returned to school to pursue a long time desire to complete her Bachelor’s degree. Felecia is married and has two beautiful teenage girls. In her free time she enjoys couponing, movies and spending time with friends and family.

Seventy-nine students who completed a Masters in business, management or health administration programs at Benedictine University and four faculty members were inducted into Benedictine University’s chapter of Sigma Beta Delta on June 10th, 2012.
